Magico S5 Speaker

The Magico S5 speaker just landed in Minneapolis St. Paul. Choice Audio is delighted to be the exclusive Minnesota dealer carrying the new Magico S series line. Magico has ventured into a more affordable line of speakers with this series. The Magico S5 speaker has many similar components to the ultra expensive Q series, yet Magico was able to reduce the price by creating an innovative cabinet design of extruded aluminum. These metal cabinets are available in several designer finishes.

After breaking in the S5’s for a few months, we have to say we are mightily impressed with these speakers. From the outset they sounded better without the grills, so we recommend removal of grills during listening sessions. To ensure peak performance, a powerful amplifier is a must. Our initial impression is a solid state amplifier might be a better match for Magicos than a tube amplifier. The S5’s have a 4 ohm impedance rating, so we advise not skimping on amplifier power. Quality cables are also a necessity. We are currently running Transparent cables, which have proven to be an excellent match for the Magico speakers.

At a first listen, the powerful bass of these speakers comes to the forefront. With two 10″ woofers, no sub is needed here. Bass is fast and detailed and reaches visceral levels with little effort. After an initial break in period, we decided to test how the S5’s handled volume. Well, our ears gave out before the speakers. At high volumes there was no sign of distortion or deterioration in sound. The S5’s perform wonderfully at quieter volumes as well. Recordings with detail in the quieter range were reproduced beautifully. In a review of the S5’s, Martin Colloms of HiFi Critic magazine wrote: “Frequency response is the most uniform I have ever measured for a loudspeaker.”

The S5’s produced clear and uncolored music on every type of material we auditioned. In classical crescendos there is detail and space around each instrument. In violin solos the resonance of the wood can be heard; in drum solos the unique sound of the stick on skin is present. Piano pieces were realistic and detailed. When properly set up, the S5’s disappear as separate speakers, giving the impression the musicians are right there in the listening room.

To audition these spectacular speakers, give Choice Audio a call.
